ABOUT ME

My name is Gianluca D'Emilio, the luthier behind Demiurge Guitars. I’ve been passionate about music and guitars since I first picked one up at the age of 11. That passion gradually turned into a drive to understand the essence of a guitar’s tone and playability, exploring different instruments, pickups, pedals, and amps to discover how each element contributes to the unique character of the electric guitar across genres.

During my third year of university, I developed a passion for lutherie and woodworking. After getting my bachelor’s degree in Physics from the Alma Mater University of Bologna in 2018, I chose to leave behind the field of physics and pursue lutherie. I enrolled in a guitar-building course with Galeazzo Frudua, a famous Italian luthier, who taught me the fundamentals of electric lutherie. Thanks to his lessons and my own research, I was able to create my first instrument: the first prototype of the Talisman model.

In 2021 I launched Demiurge Guitars, my own brand of handmade guitars. I kept refining the Talisman model, modifying its design, introducing new features and improving the quality. I also attended a course in musical instrument engineering at the Polytechnic University of Marche in Ancona, where I gained more technical knowledge on other instruments, on the acoustics of spaces, on the physics of sound and on 3D modeling.

In 2022 I joined Alusonic, a renowned boutique bass company known for using aluminium as the core element of their designs. During my time there, I was responsible for building the instruments and also crafted their custom pickups, working with innovative materials and advanced methods of construction and finishing. Alongside this experience, I continued to dedicate myself to Demiurge Guitars, constantly seeking to grow, innovate, and refine my craft.

ABOUT DEMIURGE GUITARS

There are many reasons why I chose the name DEMIURGE.

The boring one is that it contains half of my surname: D’Emilio.

The interesting ones stem from ancient Greek culture. The word “demiurge” derives from the Greek δημιουργός which among other things means “artisan” or “creator”. Quite fitting for a luthier if you ask me. But that’s not all.

According to Plato’s philosophy the Demiurge is a god-like figure who created the world we live in. He didn’t create the world from nothing though, he shaped the already existing matter in the universe giving it form, order and purpose. An artisan-God. The Great Architect of the Universe is also a similar form of deity, a superior being that fashioned the world with mathematical and geometric principles, often represented with square and compass in his hands.

The logo is the result of my friend and graphic designer Gianmarco Martelli's work. Thinking about a God who created the world using a compass, William Blake’s print “The Ancient of Days” immediately came to mind. I wanted a simple and minimalistic design so we took the element that spoke the most to us - the hand - and started working from there. The slim compass rods look like rays of light at a first glance so we came up with the idea of a hand that radiates light maintaining a triangular shape like in the original print. It’s an image that well represents the act of creation and I love the fact that the reference to the original piece of art is quite clear.
